Two new academic unions addressed as CONUA and NAMDA have finally scaled through registration hurdles as the Federal Government registered them in the public university system to exist alongside the striking ASUU
Following the recent efforts of the House of Representatives, there are indications that a truce may be brokered soon as the members of the lower National Assembly commenced intervention towards ending the seven-month long strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The Federal Government offered 23.5 per cent salary increase for all categories of the workforce in federal universities, except for the professorial cadre, which would enjoy a 35 per cent upward review.
The Federal Government has said the proposal made by the Prof. Nimi Briggs-led Committee in relation to the demands by members of ASUU and other unions in universities would gulp N1.12 trillion to implement.
The Federal Government has said that about N34 billion would be spent on the on-going payment of minimum wage consequential adjustments to education sector workers with effect from 2019.
