Nigeria’s higher education sector has witnessed a significant development following the appointment of renowned academic and university administrator, Professor Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe, as Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The appointment, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, was announced through a statement issued by the Presidency on Monday, 22nd June, 2026.

Professor Ogundipe brings to the position decades of experience in university teaching, research, administration, and policy formulation. Widely respected within academic circles, he is best known for his tenure as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos between 2017 and 2022, during which he championed initiatives aimed at strengthening academic excellence, institutional development, and stakeholder engagement.

A scholar of international repute, Professor Ogundipe specialises in Botany, with extensive research interests spanning plant taxonomy, biosystematics, ethnobotany, cytogenetics, forensic botany, and environmental conservation. He earned his doctorate degree from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and later obtained a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Lagos.

Beyond his contributions to teaching and research, the new NUC Board Chairman has held several strategic leadership positions within Nigeria’s academic and scientific communities. He currently serves as Pro-Chancellor of Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State, and is a Fellow of notable professional bodies, including the Nigerian Academy of Science, the Linnaean Society of London, and the Royal Society of Biology, London.

His record of service also includes leading the Botanical Society of Nigeria as President and chairing the Lagos State Science, Research and Innovation Council (LASRIC), where he contributed to policies promoting research, innovation, and knowledge-driven development.

Professor Ogundipe succeeds Emeritus Professor Olufemi Raphael Aina, who recently stepped down from the position. With his appointment, expectations are high that the NUC Governing Board will continue to provide strategic direction for the advancement of university education in Nigeria.

As the apex regulatory body for university education in the country, the National Universities Commission plays a pivotal role in maintaining standards, promoting quality assurance, expanding access, and supporting the growth of a globally competitive Nigerian University System. Stakeholders within the sector anticipate that Professor Ogundipe’s wealth of experience and leadership credentials will further strengthen these objectives.

The appointment is also seen as reinforcing the Federal Government’s commitment to educational transformation under the Renewed Hope Agenda, with emphasis on quality, innovation, accountability, and sustainable development in the nation’s universities.

The NUC Monday Bulletin Team warmly congratulates Professor Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe on his appointment and wishes him a successful and impactful tenure as Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Universities Commission.
