
The Honourable Minister of State for Education (HMSE) Professor Suwaiba Ahmad on Monday, 8th June, 2026, inaugurated the Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC) for the 2025 Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN)/Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Agreement at the Federal Secretariat, Abuja.
Speaking during the inauguration, the HMSE emphasised the Federal Government’s commitment to the full implementation of the Agreement and charged members of the Committee to discharge their responsibilities with diligence, transparency, and objectivity.
She noted that the Committee would play a critical role in monitoring compliance with the provisions of the Agreement and fostering industrial harmony within the Nigerian university system.
The Committee comprises representatives of relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the Federal Government and leadership of ASUU and is mandated to monitor the implementation of the Agreement, address emerging issues, and submit periodic reports to the Federal Government.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Olanrewaju Tejuoso expressed appreciation to the Chairman of the Federal Government Expanded Tertiary Institutions Negotiation Committee, Alhaji Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, CFR, for his steadfastness throughout the process of the renegotiation and for the confidence reposed in him to lead the Committee.
He noted that the successful implementation of the Agreement is critical to the welfare of academic staff, the stability of the university system, and the continued growth and global competitiveness of Nigerian universities.
The Chairman stated that the Committee would work closely with relevant stakeholders, including government agencies, university governing councils, managements, and ASUU, to monitor implementation, identify challenges, facilitate timely interventions, and promote industrial harmony through proactive engagement and dispute prevention mechanisms.
Delivering a goodwill message, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, FCVSN, described the inauguration as a significant milestone in the collective commitment of Government and ASUU to the effective implementation of the Agreement.
He emphasised that the value of any agreement lies in its faithful implementation and noted that the Committee has a crucial responsibility to monitor progress, address implementation challenges, and provide timely advice to Government.
The Executive Secretary further assured the Committee of the Commission’s full support in its role as Secretariat to the IMC and expressed confidence that the Committee’s broad-based membership would provide an effective platform for stakeholder engagement, consensus building, and the promotion of stability and uninterrupted academic activities within the Nigerian University System.The inauguration marks the commencement of the Committee’s mandate to ensure the effective implementation of the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement in support of a stable, productive, and globally competitive university system.
