The Deputy Executive Secretary (DES) Administration, National Universities Commission (NUC), Barr Victor U. Onuoha last Monday marked his 60th birthday with staff, which also marks his exit from the Commission, after attaining the mandatory retirement age in Civil Service.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Executive Secretary, Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, mni, MFR, said that the celebrant gave his best and was involved in series of activities for the Commission which he handled with distinction. He expressed thanksgiving to the Almighty God that the Deputy Executive Secretary was retiring in good health and without a dented record to his name. He urged the retiree to always see himself elf as a member of the NUC family, even at retirement.
Two Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian universities, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Abuja, Professors Abdallah Adama and the Renaissance University, Enugu State, Professor who spoke about the strength of Barrister Onuoha in his distinguished career at individual basis, unanimously described him as a jolly good fellow. According to them, he excelled in many assignments, including top-level Committees, and can be best described as a great Ambassador of the NUC in the course of his services.
They also described Barr Onuoha as a traditional man to the core with candour and humility that should be emulated. Both Vice-Chancellors wished him well in her future endeavours.
The retiring Deputy Executive Secretary (DES) was appointed into his position with effect from 1st January, 2019, following his nomination by the NUC Board chaired by Emeritus Professor Ayo Banjo.
Barrister obtained a Masters Degree n Public Administration (MPA) from the University of Lagos and a Bachelor of Law (LLB) from the University of Abuja as well as Higher Diploma (HND) from the Federal Polytechnic, Idah.
He joined the services of the National Universities Commission in April 1987 as Higher Executive Officer and rose through the ranks to the position of Deputy Director in January 2007.
He was the Acting Director in the then NUC Liaison Office, Lagos before his appointment as substantive Director, Lagos Liaison office in October, 2013.
Prior to his appointment as Director, he had served in various divisions/units of the Commission including Protocol and Public Relations Office, Management and General Services, Establishment Matters as well as Corporate Services.
Since October, 2014, he brought his vast knowledge and wealth of experience to bear in the discharge of his duties as a Director, Management Support Services by ensuring that issues of staff welfare, including promotion and staff development were handled in a timely manner and fashion.
Barr Onuoha hails from Imo State and had, during his stay in the Commission exhibited deep knowledge of his responsibilities and the Nigerian Universities System. He represented NUC in several Boards and Governing Councils of Nigerian Universities including Renaissance University, Enugu. He held the office of the Deputy Executive Secretary (Administration) with decorum, fairness and enthusiasm.
