The NUC on Thursday, February 22nd, 2024, presented provisional licenses to 2 new private universities, following their approval by the Federal Executive Council. The newly licensed private universities were: Lighthouse University, Evbuobanosa, Edo State and African School of Economics FCT
It was a record-breaking ceremony in the annals of the establishment of new private universities as the NUC last week Friday, issued provisional licenses to 37 new proprietors of the universities that scaled through the 14-step rigorous processes.
The NUC on May 12, 2022, presented provisional licenses to 12 new private universities, following approval by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) at its meeting in April.

The Federal Executive Council has, last week, approved the establishment of 20 new private universities in Nigeria, bringing their total to 99 and the total number of universities in Nigeria to 193.
