The Federal Government has approved the establishment of nine new private universities across the country, even as it imposed a seven-year moratorium on the establishment of new Federal Universities
In the Press Release titled Moratorium on Establishment of Private Universities in Nigeria issued on 10th February, 2025, the Commission announced the commencement of the review of the Guidelines for the Establishment of Private Universities in Nigeria.
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Thursday approved ₦145 billion for electrification projects in eight federal universities and one teaching hospital.
The Federal Government has expressed dissatisfaction with the current multiple accreditation bodies to universities, saying the practice where over 25 professional bodies seek to accredit courses in universities at the expense of the institutions is unacceptable.
The Executive Secretary, NUC, Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, FCVSN, on Tuesday, 29th July, 2025, inaugurated a 13- man committee, with the mandate to review the guidelines governing the establishment and operations of private universities in Nigeria.
