In furtherance of the National Universities Commission’s (NUC’s) mandate to uphold standards in the Nigerian University System (NUS), the Executive Secretary of the Commission (NUC), Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, FCVSN, approved for the engagement of experts from Nigerian universities to develop a Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) components for B. A Tiv and B. A Nupe,as the newest Nigerian Linguistic academic programme in the universities.

The exercise was held at the NUC Secretariat from 21st to 24th October, 2025, with the academic Professors drawn from across the Nigerian Universities.

Before the commencement of the exercise, the Acting Director of Academic Planning, Mallam Abubakar Girei, represented by the Deputy Director, Curriculum Development and Planning Division, Dr. Esther Mmeka, led the resource persons on a courtesy visit to the Executive Secretary, where he officially flagged-off the commencement and development exercise for the two academic programmes.

During the visit, the Executive Secretary, Professor Ribadu warmly received the resource persons and appreciated them for answering the clarion call and urged them to carry out the assignment diligently and with excellence.

The Executive Secretary expressed delight that the Commission is at the verge of developing a CCMAS for more Indigenous Languages in the NUS and wished the panel a fruitful deliberation in the curriculum development exercise.

In their separate responses, the Two Lead Resource Persons of the CCMAS Development for B. A Tiv and B.A Nupe Languages, Professors Mary A. Adebayo and Rebecaa K.D                  thanked the Executive Secretary for the confidence reposed in the team and pledged that they would work assiduously to provide the framework for the programmes, which they believed would add value to the efforts to teach and provide research activities in the two indigenous languages. 

The Tiv Panel has Professors Muhammad Alkali and Musa Bawa, while the NUC representatives are Florence Onuoha and Chinenye Augustine.

The Nupe Panel also has Professors John Akosu Adeiyongo; Nguton Sambe, while the Commission’s representatives are Kate Omotayo Onaiyekan and Hadiza Kalla.
