PROGRAMME:

Computer Science

PROGRAMME SCORE:

84.40%

ACCREDITATION STATUS:

DEFICIENCIES

REMEDIES

1. The Curriculums for the B.Sc Computer Science with Mathematics programme and the B.Sc. The computer Science with Economics programme was not fully adequate because discrete data structure and analysing algorithms were taken as a single course instead of separate courses. A few core courses like software engineering, Net-centric Computing, Formal methods, Sequential programming, electronics etc were omitted.

2. There was no evidence of implementing the University’s academic regulations in the last 3 years.

3. There was no evidence of evaluating the programme by the students.

4. The Staff/Student Ratio of 1:22 exceeded the NUC guidelines of 1:20.

5. The 4 technical and 2 administrative staff presented for the programme were not adequate compared to the number of students available.

6. Only 18 out of 35 staff, representing 51.4% of the entire staff, benefitted from the staff development programme in the last 3 years.

7. The hardware training kits, micro-computing trainers, and micro-processor trainers available in the microprocessor and digital lab were inadequate for the 770 students in the program.

8. The available space in the microprocessor and digital labs is not adequate for the 770 students in the programme.

9. There were no multimedia and public address systems in the classrooms visited.

10. There were no ramps available for the physically challenged in the buildings visited.

11. There were no books on algorithms and complexity. The other available books were inadequate for use by the 770 students in the programme, and most of the physical books were not current.

12. The funding for the programme is inadequate in the following areas:

a) Provision of books in the core areas of computer science
b) Expansion or new dedicated classrooms
c) Staff development
d) Provision of more training equipment in the laboratories.

1. The University should separate discrete data structures and analysing algorithms into distinct courses to provide in-depth knowledge in both areas. It should also revise the curriculum to include omitted core courses such as software engineering, net-centric computing, formal methods, sequential programming, and electronics.

2. The University should ensure that the academic regulations are implemented.

3. The University should introduce regular student feedback mechanisms, such as anonymous surveys or course evaluation forms, at the end of each semester. It should also implement a system to analyze feedback and incorporate constructive suggestions into programme improvement plans. The University should communicate actions taken based on feedback to the students to promote transparency.

4. The University should ensure that the staff/ student ratio of 1:20, as stipulated by the NUC, is adhered to.

5. The university should increase the number of technical and administrative staff to ensure the efficient operation of the programme.

6. The University should ensure that all the staff benefit from the staff development programme regularly.

7. The university should procure additional hardware training kits, micro-computing trainers, and micro-processor trainers to match the student population. It should also implement a laboratory equipment maintenance and upgrade policy.

8. The university should expand the microprocessor and digital laboratories to accommodate all students adequately.

9. The university should install multimedia projectors and public address systems in all classrooms to enhance teaching and learning.

10. The university should construct ramps and ensure that all buildings and facilities comply with accessibility standards.

11. The university should purchase current books on algorithms, complexity, and other core areas of computer science.

12. The university should provide more funding in the following areas:

a) Provision of books in the core areas of computer science
b) Expansion or new dedicated classrooms
c) Staff development
d) Provision of more training equipment in the laboratories.

The total score for the programme is 84.40%. It scored 32 (86.49%)  in Academic Matters, 29 (83%) in Staffing, 23.5 (87.04%) in Physical Facilities, 14 (77.78%) in Library. The programme scored 2 (66.67%) in Funding, 3 (100.00%) in Research and Collaborations and 2 (100.00%) in Employers’ Rating. the Panel recommended  FULL accreditation status for the Programme.

B.    APPROVAL BY THE COMMISSION

Based on further analysis of the report, the Commission upholds the recommendation of  FULL accreditation status for the Programme
