REMEDIES

1. There were no innovative courses in the curriculum;
2. Penalties for examination malpractices, dress code and requirements for graduation are not stipulated in the students’ handbook;
3. Inadequate core academic staff for Clinical Dentistry;
4. The staff mix by rank of 18.9:32.4:48.6 does not meet with NUC guidelines of 20:35:45;
5. 32.4% of the academic staff does not posses a Ph.D;
6. 78.4% of the academic staff did not benefit from staff development programme;
7. There is no Oral Pathology Laboratory;
8. The Phantom Head Laboratory does not have chairs and compressors to use with the available phantom heads;
9. The Restorative Dentistry Laboratory lacks….;
10. The office accommodation for academic staff were inadequately furnished;
11. Buckets of sand were inadequate and the fire extinguisher had expired;
12. The journals in library holdings were inadequate in number and currency;
13. The internet connectivity in the e-library was inadequate to access the e-resources; and
14. No evidence of educational project/research to serve the host community.

 

1. The University should ensure that innovative courses are included in the curriculum for the programme;
2. The University should ensure that the rules and regulations governing penalties for examination malpractices, dress code and requirements for graduation are included in the students’ handbook for the programme;
3. Core clinical academic staff should be adequate for dentistry programmes;
4. The University should ensure a staff mix by rank of 20:35:45;
5. All academic staff should be encouraged to possess a Ph.D;
6. All academic staff should benefit from the staff development programme;
7. Oral Pathology Laboratory should be provided for the programme;
8. The Phantom Head Laboratory should be well equipped with chairs and compressors for the programme;
9. The University should ensure that the Restorative Dentistry Laboratory is well equipped with….
10. Academic staff office accommodation should be adequately furnished;
11. The University should ensure that adequate buckets of sand and functional fire extinguisher should be provided for the programme;
12. Adequate number and more current journals should be procured for the programme;
13. Functional internet connectivity in the e-library should be provided for the programme; and
14. The University should ensure that the educational project/research should serve the host community.

 

The total score for the programme is 71.90%. It scored 29 (82.86%)  in Academic Matters, 23 (66%) in Staffing, 21 (77.78%) in Physical Facilities, 10 (55.56%) in Library. The programme scored 2 (66.67%) in Funding, 2 (66.67%) in Research and Collaborations and 0 (0.00%) in Employers’ Rating. Based on the fact that the programme scored less than 70% in any of the four core components (Academic Matters, Staffing, Physical Facilities and Library), the Panel recommended  INTERIM accreditation status for the Programme.

Based on further analysis of the report, the Commission upholds the recommendation of  INTERIM accreditation status for the Programme
