The curriculum (BMAS) does not contain any innovative course.
2. Tests and examinations for physiology and medical biochemistry do not adequately cover the curriculum.
3. The students’ logbooks for physiology and medical biochemistry indicate that adequate practicals are not conducted for the programme.

4. The standard practice of negative marking for Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) is not applied in the programme.
5. There are no logbooks in use at the Anatomy Department.
6. Students do not demonstrate good level of hard and soft skills expected of their level of study in the programme.
7. External Examiners used in assessing the programme are inadequate in number.

8. Most of the academic staff for Basic Clinical Sciences do not have MBBS qualification.

9. There are no multimedia teaching aids like projectors and smartboards in the classrooms for Basic Medical Sciences.

10. The technical staff on the programme are not adequate in number as most of them are on part-time appointment.
11. 55.6% of the academic staff and all non-teaching staff have not benefitted from Staff Development Programme in the past three years.

12. There is no dedicated laboratory for the medical biochemistry.

13. The Animal House for the programme is very inadequate in size and lacks the essential animals

14. Most of the laboratories for Basic Medical Sciences lack extractors and air conditioning system.
15. The wards in the hospital are without side labs.
16. There is no embalming machine in the Anatomy department.
17. Some of the classrooms for Basic Medical Sciences lack window panes and barriers and the current building housing the faculty has some incomplete sections.
18 . Some of the fans in the classrooms are non-functional .
19. Furniture in the Anatomy lecture hall is inadequate. Plastic chairs are also used in some classrooms.
20. Academic staff offices are not well furnished with bookshelves and some are not well ventilated.
21. Sanitation around the teaching area is poor.

22. Physical library books and journals are inadequate in number.

23. There is currently no completed facility for e-library for the clinical students

24. There is no multidisciplinary approach to research and collaborations in the programme and no project//research has been created to serve the host community.

 

1. The curriculum (BMAS) should be enriched by the addition of at least four innovative courses without exceeding the maximum credit load.
2. Tests and examinations for physiology and medical biochemistry should adequately cover the curriculum.
3. The University should ensure that practicals designed for the programme are conducted to adequately cover the curriculum.
4. The University should ensure that negative marking is applied in Multiple Choice Questions administered to students on the programme.
5. Logbooks should be made available for practicals in the Anatomy department.
6. The University should ensure that students are adequately trained to equip them with good level of hard and soft skills relevant to the programme.

7. The University should ensure that the ratio of the number of external examiners to the number of students is improved on.
8. The University should ensure that academic staff with MBBS qualification are engaged on the programme for Basic Clinical Sciences.

9. The University should provide adequate teaching aids to boost quality of teaching and learning in the programme.

10. The University should engage more permanent technical staff for the programme.

11. The University should ensure that all staff benefit from the Staff Development Programme.

12. The University should ensure that a laboratory is dedicated to Medical Biochemistry for seamless operation in the programme.

13. The University should provide standard and well stocked and equipped Animal House for the programme.

14. The Universities should make adequate provision for extractors and air conditioning system in the laboratories.
15. Provisions should be made for side labs in the hospital wards.
16. The University should procure embalming machine for effective and efficient preservation of cadavers.
17. The University should urgently ensure completion of the building housing the Basic Medical Sciences to provide an enabling environment for both staff and students on the programme.
18. All non-functional ceiling fans in the classrooms should be either repaired or replaced.
19. Furniture in the Anatomy lecture hall should be upgraded. The use of plastic chairs should be discontinued in the classrooms due to release of hazardous chemicals especially during very hot weather.
20. Well ventilated and furnished academic staff offices should be provided for academic staff on the programme.
21. The University should improve on sanitation around the teaching area.
22. The University should procure adequate number of books and journals for the programme.
23. The University should ensure urgent completion of the e-library facility for the clinical students.
24. The University should ensure a multidisciplinary approach to research and collaborations in the programme and engagement in project/research to serve the host community.

 

The total score for the programme is 69.83%. It scored 24.3 (69.43%)  in Academic Matters, 27.5 (78.57%) in Staffing, 14.7 (54.44%) in Physical Facilities, 15.0 (83.33%) in Library. The programme scored 1.0 (33.33%) in Funding, 2.0 (66.67%) in Research and Collaborations and 0 (0.00%) in Employers’ Rating. Based on the fact that the programme scored less than 70% in any of the four core components (Academic Matters, Staffing, Physical Facilities and Library), the Panel recommended  INTERIM accreditation status for the Programme.

B.    APPROVAL BY THE COMMISSION

Based on further analysis of the report, the Commission upholds the recommendation of  INTERIM accreditation status for the Programme
