REMEDIES

1. The following BMAS courses are omitted in the curriculum: (a) Engineering Thermodynamics, (b) Timber Structures, (c) Building Economics and Measurement, (d) Operations Research and (e) Management of Building Projects.

2. Project Planning and Control, and Advanced Project Management are offered as electives instead of compulsory, contrary to the BMAS provisions.

3. Students did not demonstrate very good level of hard and soft skills relevant to their level of study.

4. Internal quality assurance mechanism is not effective in the Department and there is no documentation of activities.

5. The proportion of staff core to the subject area provides for only 66.7% of the teaching staff need.

6. 37.5% of the core academic staff do not have Ph.D. degree.

7. The Department is headed by a Lecturer 1, without Ph.D.

8. 42.9% of the non-teaching staff have not benefitted from Staff Development Programme in the past three years.

9. The following equipment are not available for the programme: (a) Tensile Strength Testing machine, (b) Triaxial Shear machine, (c) Compressive Strength testing machine, and (d) Permeability Testing apparatus.

10. Subscription to only one database relevant to the programme is inadequate.

11. Internet connectivity is slow and impedes access to e-resources.

12. Funding for the programme is inadequate.

13. There is no multidisciplinary research and collaboration with other institutions.

 

1. The curriculum should be reviewed in line with the NUC BMAS to include all omitted courses.

2. The curriculum should be reviewed in line with the NUC BMAS.

3. The University should ensure that students are properly acquire hard and soft skills relevant to their levels of study.

4. The University should ensure that an effective mechanism exists to impact on the programme, and that activities are properly documented.

5. The University should ensure that the proportion of academic staff core to the programme provides for at least 75% of the teaching staff need.

6. All academic staff should be encouraged to obtain Ph.D. degree.

7. The University should ensure that only qualified academics not below the rank of Senior Lecturer are appointed as Head of Department.

8. The University should ensure that all non-teaching staff benefit from Staff Development Programme.

9. All essential workshop and laboratory equipment should be provided for the programme.

10. The University should subscribe to at least two online databases for more current and robust e-resources.

11. The internet connectivity should be improved upon.

12. The programme should be adequately funded.

13. The University should encourage multidisciplinary research collaborations with other institution.

 

The total score for the programme is 77.69%. It scored 25 (75.76%)  in Academic Matters, 28 (80.00%) in Staffing, 23 (85.19%) in Physical Facilities, 14 (77.78%) in Library. The programme scored 1 (33.33%) in Funding, 1 (33.33%) in Research and Collaborations and 2 (100.00%) in Employers’ Rating. Based on the fact that the programme scored up to 70% and above in all four core components (Academic Matters, Staffing, Physical Facilities and Library), the Panel recommended  FULL accreditation status for the Programme.

B.    APPROVAL BY THE COMMISSION

Based on further analysis of the report, the Commission upholds the recommendation of  FULL accreditation status for the Programme
