REMEDIES

1. The philosophy aligns with CCMAS not BMAS standards. Hence. it is okay at 100 level and 200 level but not 300 level.

2. The Curriculum is not fully adequate for the degree programme as its lack some basic BMAS courses (Seed plants, Introduction to microbiology I & II, Nigerian Vegetation, Diversity of plants, Mycology, Plant breeding, Economics botany, Plant reproduction, Plant tissue culture, Molecular Biology, Paleo botany and Paleontology).

3. The Practical’s conducted are of good quality but did not cover the curriculum.

4. Students demonstrated average level of hard and soft skills relevant to the programme.

5. The staff mi by rank is consistent with NUC guidelines in only one category (21:30:49)

6. 33% of the non- academic staff have not benefitted from staff development programme.

7. The laboratory equipment inspected meet the BMAS specifications covering the broad areas of the programme (by quality, quantity and functionality up to 60% but less than 70%).

8. Academic Staff offices are slightly inadequate in space but well equipped.

9. Funding for the programme is inadequate.

 

1. The university should ensure that the philosophy and objectives are clearly defined and similar to those laid down in the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards for 300 level.

2. The university should ensure that the Curriculum contains all the core/compulsory courses prescribed by the BMAS across all the levels of study without exceeding the minimum credit load.

3. The University should ensure that the practical’s conducted are of good quality depth and scope covered.

4. The University should ensure that students are exposed to adequate level of soft and hard skills.

5. The University should ensure that the staff mix by rank is consistent with NUC guidelines in all the three categories (20: 35: 45) or deviates from NUC guidelines by virtue of high proportion (over 25%) of professor’s in the programme).

6. All non-academic staff should be encouraged to benefit from staff development programme.

7. The University should ensure that the laboratory equipment meet the BMAS specifications covering the broad areas of the programme (by quality, quantity and functionality up to 80% or more).

8. The University should ensure that academic staff offices are adequate in space.

9. Improved funding is required to properly maintain existing physical facilities.

 

The total score for the programme is 72.27%. It scored 22 (66.67%)  in Academic Matters, 28 (80.00%) in Staffing, 18 (66.67%) in Physical Facilities, 14 (77.78%) in Library. The programme scored 1 (33.33%) in Funding, 3 (100.00%) in Research and Collaborations and (0.00%) in Employers’ Rating. Based on the fact that the programme scored less than 70% in any of the four core components (Academic Matters, Staffing, Physical Facilities and Library), the Panel recommended  INTERIM accreditation status for the Programme.

Based on further analysis of the report, the Commission upholds the recommendation of  INTERIM accreditation status for the Programme
