1. Students’ practical reports show that plans produced during field observation are not up to standards as scales and other necessary information not provided.
2. Students feedback highlighted the inadequate number of equipment (plotters & scanners), Wi-Fi access points and lack of a dedicated GIS lab for practical work.
3. The proportion of staff core to the subject are provides for less that 50% (42.8%) of teaching staff.
4. Staff Mix by rank of 8:50:42 is consistent with NUC guidelines in only one category.
5. 67% of academic staff of the programme have a Ph.D.
6. 67% of academic staff have benefitted from the staff development programme.
7. The programme does not have a dedicated GIS Lab. There is need for more equipment in the laboratory. (At least 10 levelling staff, 1 A0 plotter/Scanner, 6 handheld GPS receivers, etc.)
8. The classrooms and lecture theatre for the programme are not well maintained.
9. Office accommodation is slightly inadequate in space.
10. There are no books in the areas of geodesy, photogrammetry, remoting sensing and hydrography in the physical library.
11. Campus hotspots/Wi-Fi access is limited to the library and unavailable in the classroom area.
12. Funding for the programme is inadequate.

 

1. The university should ensure that practical’s conducted are of good quality, depth and scope covered;
2. The university should ensure that course content, learning materials, course delivery and physical facilities are adequate;
3. The university should ensure that the proportion of staff core to the subject area provides for 75% or more of the teaching staff;
4. The university should ensure that the staff mix by rank complies with NUC guidelines of 20:35:47;
5. The university should ensure that all academic staff of the programmes are Ph.D. holders;
6. The university should ensure that all academic staff benefit from the staff development programme;
7. The university should ensure that the department has a dedicated GIS Lab with accompanying equipment and software;
8. Standard classrooms and lecture theatre should be well equipped and maintained at all times for students of the programme;
9. The university should ensure that office accommodation are adequate in space and well equipped;
10. The university should ensure that the library holdings are of good quality and very relevant and adequate in number and coverage;
11. The university should ensure that access to available e-books and e-journals for staff and students using campus hotspots is improved around the classroom ;
12. The programme should be adequately funded.

 

The total score for the programme is 74.79%. It scored 27 (81.82%)  in Academic Matters, 23 (65%) in Staffing, 20 (74.07%) in Physical Facilities, 15 (83.33%) in Library. The programme scored 2 (66.67%) in Funding, 2 (66.67%) in Research and Collaborations and (0.00%) in Employers’ Rating. Based on the fact that the programme scored less than 70% in any of the four core components (Academic Matters, Staffing, Physical Facilities and Library), the Panel recommended  INTERIM accreditation status for the Programme.

Based on further analysis of the report, the Commission upholds the recommendation of  INTERIM accreditation status for the Programme
