DEFICIENCIES

REMEDIES

1) The curriculum is not fully adequate (find attached note). It has
the following deficiencies:
a) Course structure/synopsis is muddled up
b) Course codes do not comply with BMAS/CCMAS
c) Duplication of courses in the same semester
d) Inclusion of courses not specified in CCMAS and not relevant
to the programme
e) Some courses do not have the synopsis
f) Credit units allocated to some courses do not comply with
CCMAS
2) The Inclusion of some innovative courses that are not relevant to
the programme, thereby adding excess credit loads to the
students.
3) Academic regulations as contained in the students’ Handbook are
not well publicized.
4) Practical work for the programme is not of good standard. It is
not innovative, or creative and do not express the industrial
aspect of the programme.
5) Students do not demonstrate hard and soft skills relevant to the
programme
6) Less than 50% of non-academic staff have not benefitted from
staff development in the past three years.
7) Laboratory equipment does not fully meet NUC specifications
covering the broad areas of the programme. It lacked GC-NS, GC-
FID, Electrophoresis, NMR, Flame Photometer, preparatory room,
charts.
8) Library books are not very current and inadequate in copies.

 

1) The University should ensure that the programme’s curriculum is
adequate and fully compliant with provisions of NUC BMAS and
CCMAS.
2) The university should ensure that additional courses for the
programme are relevant and do not add excess credit load to the
students.
3) The university should ensure that academic regulations in
the students’ Handbook are well publicized.
4) The university should ensure that practical work for the
programme is of a good standard, creative, and express the
industrial aspect of the programme.
5) The university should ensure that students acquire the necessary
soft and hard skills relevant to the programme.
6) The university should ensure that all non-academic staff benefit
from a staff development programme.
7) The university should ensure that laboratory equipment is
adequate and fully meets the specifications of BMAS/CCMAS.
8) The university should ensure that library books for the
programme are adequate in currency and quantity.

 

The total score for the programme is 84%. It scored 25 (76%)  in Academic Matters, 34 (97%) in Staffing, 23 (85%) in Physical Facilities, 15 (83%) in Library. The programme scored 2 (67%) in Funding, 2 (67%) in Research and Collaborations and 1 (50%) in Employers’ Rating. Based on the fact that the programme scored up to 70% and above in all four core components (Academic Matters, Staffing, Physical Facilities and Library), the Panel recommended  FULL accreditation status for the Programme.

Based on further analysis of the report, the Commission upholds the recommendation of  FULL accreditation status for the Programme
